Kehä 1 - Rock tunnel ”MESTARINTUNNELI” is now open
The traffic on Kehä I highway will shift inside a road tunnel at the northern side of the Rantarata rail line. The new tunnel will have four lanes in both directions. It will be approximately 500 metres long, out of which 200 metres will be built in concrete and 300 metres in rock. At its deepest, the tunnel will be 20 metres beneath the surface. Mestarintunneli will open for traffic in 2011.

Kehä I (Ring Road I) is the busiest highway in Finland and a major traffic hub in the Greater Helsinki Region. Leppävaara is an important town centre, where up to 70 000 vehicles pass Kehä I daily. The traffic volume is predicted to grow considerably in the following decades: by 50 % on Turunväylä highway and by 20 % on Kehä I.

Ring Road I construction site was named the infrastructure construction site of the year because of successful construction site management and excellent traffic arrangements. YIT was the contractor for the Ring Road I site, and Vahanen Group company Fundatec Oy was in charge of the design of a rock tunnel.

Rakennuslehti magazine has awarded the best construction site in Finland since 1986. The most important criteria of Rakennuslehti when selecting the sites include compliance with schedules and cost/quality objectives, safety at work, demanding nature of the site, site management and development work at the site that promotes the construction industry as a whole.
